Focus on Bihar - Madhepura district
Situated in what is known as the Kosi Belt - a region in north-eastern Bihar shaped by the River Kosi - Madhepura has suffered devastating floods over the years. Village outreach programmes during the monsoon are difficult if not impossible.
The language Maithili and its variants is widely spoken. Maithili is also the first language of eye surgeon Dr Amit Anand, who runs the Anand Eye Hospital.
Dr Amit accumulated extensive surgical and medical experience in Nepal and other parts of India before returning to his home district 11 years ago.
