Restoring sight since 1889, the secret of Bamdah’s longevity and sustainability is the fact that it has never been without an eye surgeon. Dr Samuel Murmu is the 7th eye surgeon in charge of Bamdah. It is is the oldest eye hospital in Bihar.
Excerpt from Ougrowing the Big : sight for India’s blind and a new way of seeing the world.
‘Going against the flow of patients entering the hospital is a skinny little girl in school uniform. This is Naina - the name means ‘eyes’. She lives bang next to the hospital and the grounds are her playground. Two of Naina’s aunts work at the hospital. When asked what she will do once grown up, she looks as if you have asked the daftest question in the world. Work at the eye hospital dah.’
